This handbook is to help printers print color-managed files using
the latest quality control techniques. While this should be a top
priority for printers, recent conferences indicate that they are more
concerned that the industry is becoming a commodity with fewer and
fewer experienced people and no real customer expectations for quality.
However, customers and the general public are
sensitive to the quality of print, as exemplified by packaging. What
the customer really wants is cross-media consistency. The problem, as
we have found at the standards level, is that this goes even beyond
historic process control (which is still not being generally properly
done) up to visual image control, which is hard to contemplate much
less to do. To do this, the standards community must continue to define
“good.” We need to finalized the definition of good printing and how
that relates to density, dot gain (TVI) and gray balance in ways that
not only are embraced by all, but also lead the way to eventually
defining “good imaging.”
